WELCOME TO WRITTLE CARDS
CARDS has been part of the Writtle community for over fifty years, and we are still doing drama, having fun and welcoming new members. Our first meeting was in Writtle Village Hall in January 1969. Back then, the population of Writtle was growing fast as young people moved into the new housing estates. CARDS was set up as part of the new Community Association, and the name stood for “Writtle Community Association Repertory Drama Society”. We have put on two to three performances a year ever since, and we meet in the old Scout Hut on Paradise Road.
The group has changed and developed in many ways since the early days, although we still have some members who remember them! We always attract an enthusiastic audience for our shows, and we have also always welcomed into the group anyone who is interested in acting, technical theatre, or directing. No qualifications or experience are required, simply curiosity or enthusiasm for drama and theatre. We are a friendly and sociable group, and love to give newcomers a part to play in our activities.
The range of productions over the years has been immense, from Shakespeare to modern writers and self-written dramas, from farces to thrillers. Although there has been a recent trend towards comedy, we are always also looking for pieces with a serious theme – anything, in fact which will engage and entertain our audience and can be successfully presented in the Village Hall. Please come and see one of our shows, and if you like it, why not contact us and see what it would be like to join in yourself? You will certainly find a warm welcome.
